It's way too easy to plan out our whole lives without really consulting God first. Everyone tells us we have to make a plan for the future; in our schooling, careers, retirement and beyond. It is tempting to think that the popular old saying, "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail," gives us license to boldly proclaim that we know exactly what we are going to do in the future. Well, James will tell us, "If you plan to submit, you will submit to God's plan." God through James takes this pretty stinking seriously, and we are called to do so, as well!

James doesn't mince any words as he confronts each one of us with the difficult truth that we can often live in a way that is an offense to our loving God. This battle against the flesh is an all-out war; and James tells us we need to know our enemy, know God's strategy, and know our rank if we are going to be successful.

The difference between man's "wisdom" and God's wisdom is clearly articulated by James in this crucial passage. As a Christian, I want my life to reflect the grace that has been shown to me. Sadly, my words often do not display God's grace very well. Through this challenging and inspiring passage, James points out the great power of our words, the fact that our tongue can and will control us, where our words come from, and even the heavy responsibility of teaching in the church. A very practical and life-changing sermon for the preacher… and hopefully for all who listen!
