Jesus has a powerful ministry in the midst of many people. Some hear his words and see his actions and respond to the evidence positively. But in this section of Luke we see many who jump to the wrong conclusion about who Jesus is and where/who he comes from. Through their wrong conclusions we can see what keeps many from believing the truth about Jesus.

After Jesus finishes praying, his disciples ask for a teaching on prayer. Jesus' model prayer (known as The Lord's Prayer) demonstrates our special access to God the Father, with an emphasis on His holiness, provision and forgiveness. Jesus sums up the teaching by focusing on God's gift of the Holy Spirit to each believer.

Jesus commends Mary's decision, pointing out that disciples should first abide, then allow works of Christian service to flow from a healthy relationship with Him.

In our continuing series through the book of Luke, we see Jesus put to the test by a lawyer. He wants to know how a person can ensure they will inherit eternal life. The answer is in what is called the "great command"; to love the Lord your God with all of your heart, soul, strength and mind and to love one's neighbor as oneself. But this proves to be a more difficult challenge than we may expect... Jesus illustrates his point through a story about a man who is robbed, beaten and left for dead. Who is my neighbor? Jesus sends out 72 disciples with authority and instructions to take His mission to the people. They returned praising God for miracles and He realigned thieir focus on the importance of the Gospel above all else. Included in this passage are myriad instructions for how we should live missionally. Jesus encouraged the disciples to meet people's physical and emotional needs in tangible ways, making way for the Gospel to meet their spiritual needs. The passage closes with Jesus rejoicing in the Holy Spirit, to God the Father, because of His revelation of truth to the disciples.
