Jesus establishes Himself as the authority in the life of the disciple. In the course of a parable for His disciples, and a confrontation and correction with the Pharisees, Jesus reveals Himself as the authority over the disciple's money and possessions. He is also the authority over the disciple's mission and direction. Most importantly, He is the authority over the disciple's innermost thoughts, motives and desires.

We all know that salvation is solely dependent on grace. But what about discipleship? Does grace stop at salvation? Jesus gives a resounding "No!" to that question in this text. By learning what it means to HATE human relationships, our own wit, and our possessions we can learn what it truly costs to be a disciple of Jesus Christ! Along the road we learn that unless we embrace the idea of "I think I can't" we will never become the salty disciples that Jesus wants to use in this world.

Jesus confronts a group of Pharisees on their hypocrisy, pride, selfishness and unbelief; all in the course of one incredibly awkward dinner party. Jesus teaches them (and us) to instead choose integrity, humility, servanthood and belief. It is simply belief in Jesus, and what he accomplished on the cross, that secures our place at the "Great Banquet" that Jesus describes.
