The day of Jesus' death by crucifixion was the ugliest day in the history of mankind, but it was also the most beautiful day in the history of mankind. Luke's account evokes the ugliness and the beauty of that day for those who have not yet believed in Jesus as Savior, and for those who have believed and are seeking to live as disciples. Jesus calls us to draw near and to remember the duality of His death.

In the trials of Jesus before the Jewish leaders, Herod and Pilate, we see five different world views that are in conflict with Jesus' character and mission. All of them have present day corollaries for the pre-Christian and for the believer alike. When there is continuing conflict between Jesus and us, there can be no resolution and no relationship. The Good News is that Jesus reveals a way to end the conflict and enter into a relationship with God.

As Jesus enters the garden of Gethsemane for the final time, he gives the disciples his final instruction; pray. Specifically to pray so that they may not enter into temptation. Strangely nobody asks the most obvious question of our Lord--"How?! How do I pray that way? How do I pray to that end?" Through Jesus' prayer we see the answer to these questions. He provides an amazing view of prayer through his "rasslin' match" with God. We have much to learn about what prayer can and should be.

After initiating the Lord's Supper, Jesus sets his sights on giving some final instructions to his disciples. Having trained them up for the ministry ahead, he knows the disciples will be physically separated from him after his death. So he encourages them to remember his teaching as they enter the big, bad world.
