Credit Where Credit’s Due - Audio
Sunday Nov 11, 2012
Sunday Nov 11, 2012
Israel finally returns to God after the ark is returned, but as they are repenting, their enemies the Philistines surround them. Rather than quitting or trying to win themselves, they ask Samuel to pray for them and God shows up in a big (and loud) way. The Philistines are defeated and Samuel sets up a stone and names it Ebenezer (“stone of [God’s] help”). Israel takes credit for their sin and gives credit to God for His work.

Are You a Leader or a Manager? - Video

Sunday Nov 04, 2012
With the return of the Ark of Covenant, the Israelites seek to worship the Lord, but go about it in a way that is irreverent and sloppy. They reveal themselves to be managers, rather than leaders as they simply react to the situation. In our lives, we are called to be leaders. That means proactively thinking and planning for our service, our reaction to temptation, and our confrontations.

Description: After God uses the Philistines to discipline Israel for their rebellion, the Philistines capture the ark of the covenant and bring it back home. Their desire to use God Almighty as their “good-luck charm” backfires, however, and they are afflicted by the heavy hand of God. The hand of God is present and active today, as well. We must learn to recognize his hand, respond to it appropriately, and reflect his hand in our leadership roles. We serve a hands-on sort of God!

Let's call it what it is - Audio

The beginning of 1 Samuel culminates in chapter 4. God metes out the justice and judgment he has promised throughout the beginning of the book. The rebellion of Israel and its leaders, and the gravity of the situation may be something that Eli and the elders of Israel would have rather ignored; but it's time to call it what it is. And God does just that. Likewise we better ask ourselves: Is there rebellion in my life that I am ignoring? Am I burying my head in the sand and hoping for the best? Am I plugging my ears to God's voice? If so, I better call it what it is… before God has to.

At the same time that we see the decline (or complete absence) of the ministry of Eli, Samuel meets face to face with Jesus himself as a young man. As Jesus speaks to Samuel, Samuel listens and responds according to the heart and mind of God. Likewise God is speaking to you today. Are you listening?

Case Study #2 – Home is where the Heart is…and the Mind! - Video

Samuel grows up in the service of the Lord. In contrast, the sons of the chief priest continue to pursue their own wicked desires. The contrast between Samuel's heart and mind, and the hearts and minds of Eli's sons is striking. In the passage we see both a cautionary tale for parents, mentors, leaders and families; as well as a standard for which to strive. To leave godly legacies, we must set our hearts (and minds) on God's.
