Sunday Jan 20, 2013
Sunday Jan 20, 2013
King-elect David has just finished slaying the giant, Goliath. As he speaks with King Saul the heart of Saul's son, Jonathan, is knit with David's. The presence of the Holy Spirit in David's life brings a godly friend and ministry partner into David's life. It also brings a foe, as King Saul realizes that David is far more suited for the job than he is. The Spirit in David's life brings a great foe full of fear and jealousy. We will see this applied to our lives, as well. As we live the Spirit-filled life, we will need godly friends to help us as we discover God's foes are our foes. Look for friends; watch for foes.

How Big is My God? - Video
Sunday Jan 13, 2013
Sunday Jan 13, 2013
Israel faces the Philistine army in the valley of Elah. Rather than fight the Israelite army, they send out a champion—and challenge Israel to do the same. The champions can fight and the winner can take all. This sounds especially good to the Philistines, because they have a nearly 10-foot giant trained in battle and thirsty for blood. The Israelites trembled in fear as they compared their size to the size of the giant. But young David made a different comparison. He compared the size of the giant to the size of his God. How big is my God when I face trials, difficulties, giants?

Saul's decline as king of Israel comes to its brutal conclusion. Saul is given a very specific task by God himself, aimed at wiping out a cancer in the land. When he fails to fulfill the command—but instead seeks to build up his own kingdom, wealth and reputation—God passes final judgment on Saul's kingship. As leaders, we must learn from this cautionary tale! Partial obedience is disobedience! There is no way around it. Listen to the voice of God, meditate on his words, obey them fully. This is true discipleship. This is true leadership.

Self-Centeredness: the Anti-Leader - Video
Sunday Dec 23, 2012
Sunday Dec 23, 2012
Description: Saul and his son Jonathan are starkly contrasted in their leadership in this pericope. We see the hard heart of Saul continue to focus inward, resulting in completely self-centered leadership. In contrast, Jonathan exhibits God-centered leadership… and eventually others-centered leadership. This is the heart of Jesus himself when he named the two greatest commands: to love God and to love others! What kind of leader will I be?
